Miland Home Maintenance Tips

HOME MAINTENANCE TIPS

We know home maintenance might seem like a drag, but helping to prevent wear and tear and seasonal damages means we have to get a few things done every couple months. Seasonal home maintenance is the easiest way to make sure you are keeping up with the proper schedule. Here are a few things the experts at Miland Home Construction recommends checking on every spring to get your home through Texas storm season.

CLEAN THOSE GUTTERS

Texas weather isn’t friendly when it comes to throwing leaves and debris on your roof and into your gutter system. Make sure to clean these out before the spring season, and more importantly tornado and storm season. This way your roof and gutter system are prepared for any type of weather. Double check to make sure your downspouts channel water at least five feet away from your home’s foundation walls.

Hire a Professional:

If Ladders, heights, and hoses aren’t your thing, leave it to an expert. Local handyman services and even roofing companies offer maintenance packages to take care of Gutter Cleaning.

Do it Yourself:

Find a ladder and some work gloves to check your gutters for debris. Remove as much as you can by hand, and then rinse out the remaining dirt and grime with a garden hose. You can even push the hose into the downspout to make sure all the bends in the gutter are clear.

INSPECT ALL FILTERS & VENTS

Water, Range Hood, and Air Vent Filters: Should be replaced every 3-6 months depending on the type of appliance and filter.

Dryer Vent:  A dryer vent with a clog can become a major fire hazard. You should periodically disconnect the vent from the back of your dryer and clean out built up lint. If you have access to your outdoor dryer vent cover, it should be cleaned to make sure the flap can move freely.

Home Maintenance Tips - Foundation Vent

Foundation Vents: If you house has a crawlspace then it should have vents along the foundation walls. They are essentially just small rectangular openings in the foundation that are covered with a wire screen or vent that allows air circulation under the home. Spring is a great time to clean foundation vent after they have collected debris from the fall and winter seasons. They can be cleaned by hand or with a shop vacuum. You should also inspect the foundation vents and screens for any damage, foundation crawlspaces are the perfect home for many small animals.
